How to convert a video to GIF

The whole job is three moves, and none of them involve an account or a progress bar for an upload.

  1. Drop the video inDrag a file onto the panel or click to pick one. The page reads it straight from disk, so a 400MB clip opens as fast as a 4MB one.
  2. Set width, frame rate and trimMove the sliders and watch the estimated output size change. 480px at 15fps under ten seconds is the setting that works for almost everything.
  3. Convert and downloadPress convert. The first pass reads your clip and builds a palette from its actual colours, the second encodes against it. The finished GIF appears with its real size next to the download button.

Every other video to GIF converter puts a network round trip between step one and step three. That is the wait you are used to, and it is not the encoding, it is the transfer. Take it away and a ten second clip is done in the time it takes to read this paragraph.

GIF maker controls

A converter turns one file into another. A GIF maker lets you decide what the GIF is. The panel above does both, so you are not exporting a rough GIF and then hunting for a second tool to fix it.

  • Trim. Start and end handles over the source, in tenths of a second. The three seconds you want is a much better GIF than the forty you have.
  • Speed. A quarter speed to four times speed. Speeding a clip up is the cheapest way to shorten a GIF without cutting the moment.
  • Crop. Square, vertical and wide, centred. Useful when the GIF is going somewhere with a fixed frame.
  • Loop. Forever, once, or three times. Written into the file as a Netscape loop block, which is what every browser reads.
  • Palette and dithering. Two to 256 colours, with Sierra2 4a, Bayer or no dithering. This is the pair that decides whether a gradient bands.
  • Output format. GIF, animated WebP or APNG from the same panel.

Text captions and stickers are not here. Adding them well needs a font stack and a layout editor, and a half-built version of that would be worse than the one you already have in whatever made the video.

Kommodo is the honest comparison, because it is also in-browser. The difference there is control: it offers three fixed presets, so if your GIF comes out at 11MB there is nothing to turn down. Here every dial moves and the estimated size updates as you move it.

GIF still too big? Ten seconds at 640px will do that. Drop the finished file into the GIF compressor and pull it under a Discord, Slack or email limit without re-encoding from the source.

Getting a GIF that actually looks good

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame. Everything about output quality comes down to how those 256 slots get spent, which is why the two pass palette matters more than any other setting.

  • Start from the best source you have. A 1080p original quantises far better than a 720p re-upload, even when the GIF ends up at 480px.
  • Output between 480 and 640 pixels wide. A 480px GIF at 256 colours looks sharper than a 1080px one, because the same palette covers four times fewer pixels. Bigger is not better here, it is the opposite.
  • Keep it under ten seconds. Length is the dominant cost. GIF stores frames as diffs against the previous frame with no motion compensation, so twice the length is close to twice the file.
  • Use 10 to 15 fps for talking and screen capture, 20 to 25 for fast motion. Above 25 you are paying for frames the format cannot time accurately anyway.
  • Match dithering to the content. Sierra2 4a for skin, sky and gradients. None for screen recordings, logos and flat illustration, where dithering only adds noise and bytes.

What you can drop in

The converter accepts whatever ffmpeg can decode, which is not the same list as whatever your browser can play, and the difference is the thing most pages on this search get backwards. The decoding happens in this tab, in a copy of ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so a codec your browser has never heard of is still a codec the converter has. We drop five files through the production build and record what happens: H.264 MP4, VP9 WebM, HEVC MOV, ProRes 422 HQ MOV and MPEG-4 Part 2 AVI. All five convert. The last three get no preview, because Chromium will not play them, and that is the only difference you will notice.

Questions people actually ask

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The converter is ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and it runs inside this tab. Your file is read from disk by the page, encoded in memory and handed back to you as a download. Nothing crosses the network, which is also why there is no queue, no size cap and no retention policy to read.

Is this an AI video to GIF converter?

Not in the way most sites use the word. Converting video to GIF is palette quantisation and frame timing, which ffmpeg has done well for twenty years, and no model improves on it. What this tool does do is pick the palette from your specific clip in a separate first pass instead of reusing a fixed one, which is the change you can actually see.

Is there a file size or length limit?

There is no limit we impose. The practical ceiling is your own memory, because the clip is decoded in the tab. On a normal laptop, clips up to a few hundred megabytes are fine. Trimming to the seconds you want before converting is faster than converting the whole thing and cutting later.

What FPS should I use?

Between 10 and 15 for most things, and up to 20 or 25 if the motion is fast. GIF stores a delay per frame in centiseconds rather than a frame rate, so only 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 fps come out exactly as asked. Ask for 30 and you get 33.3. There is a full table on the GIF frame rate page.

Why is my GIF so large?

Length first, width second, frame rate third. GIF has no motion compensation, so ten seconds costs roughly twice what five seconds costs. Cutting the width from 960 to 480 removes three quarters of the pixels. If the file is already made, the GIF compressor will pull it down without going back to the source.

Does the GIF keep the audio?

No, and no GIF anywhere does. The format has no audio track at all. If sound matters, keep the clip as MP4 or WebM, or export a muted MP4 which most chat apps will autoplay like a GIF at a fraction of the size.

Can I convert on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in mobile Safari and Chrome, and because the file never leaves the phone you are not pushing a 200MB clip over cellular. Very long 4K clips can run a phone out of memory, so trim first. There is a dedicated page for the iPhone route.

GIF or WebP?

WebP, on size and on colour. Across the clips we measure the estimator against, animated WebP at the quality this tool uses came out between 0.15 and 0.28 of the GIF, so between about a seventh and a quarter of the size, and it keeps true colour instead of 256. Use GIF when the destination demands it, which in 2026 still means some email clients, a few forums and older internal tools. The output menu here writes GIF, animated WebP or APNG.

Is there a watermark or a sign up?

Neither. There is no account, no email step, no watermark and no paid tier that unlocks the good settings. Every control on the panel is available on the first conversion.

Which video formats can I drop in?

Whatever ffmpeg can decode, which is a much longer list than whatever your browser can play. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, M4V, OGV and AVI all work, and so do the codecs browsers refuse: HEVC, ProRes and MPEG-4 Part 2 were all dropped through this tool and all converted. What a missing browser codec costs you is the preview, not the conversion, because the decoder ships with the tool rather than being borrowed from the browser. When that happens the preview pane says so and everything else carries on.

Other formats

AVI, MKV, AVCHD, MPEG, 3GP and anything else ffmpeg can decode work on the video to gif converter as well. These pages exist because the advice differs by format, not because the tool does.
